Lights with ADD layer tutorial by martinacecilia Lights with ADD layer tutorial by martinacecilia
I remember learning this trick half a dozen of years ago, when I was doing the first steps towards digital art. I saw it in an open canvas event file I downloaded somewhere and I found it really interesting. Sadly that didn't work that well on photoshop so I stopped using it. But somewhere between the versions Adobe worked on his Linear Dodge blending mode and it's vaguely good now!
By the way, if you use OpenCanvas or paint tools SAI you're luckier, it works better there!

:bulletblue: it works on Photoshop, Painter, paint tool SAI, Open Canvas for sure. Tell me if you try it on other software! [edit]Works great on the GIMP too![/edit]
:bulletblue: great for digital colouring and painting and photomanip as well.

font used: it's really good, take it!

i tried this but the light keeps coming out white even when i put orange ): can you help me please? other then that i thank you for this tutorial :)

uhm, it could be several things. maybe the orange is too light. (a brown works well too) Or you could try lowering the opacity of the gradient (sometimes when it gets too bright it comes out as white) and by lowering the opacity I mean lowering it A LOT (like 20% or 30%). Or it could be that you're in "color dodge" mode instead of "linear dodge"?

which mode in SAI is "linear dodge", i used luminosity because it said that it was linear doge in the help manual but im not sure if it is. Also i used a brush because i don't have a gradient in SAI, do you think thats why it didnt work? Thanks for replying :)

yes, it's Luminosity, it kinda work for me, actually: [link]

maybe it's the color you're using?

probably is because the background colour i tested with was a sky blue,i tried it on another colour just then and it came out orange.

i guess it must be the background colour,im new to this kind of stuff.anyway thanks for your help :)
